Serial to Ethernet

Serial to Ethernet device server allows companies to connect legacy serial devices to an Ethernet LAN/WAN. TNS offers Moxa range of Nport device servers. Steps to choose a suitable serial device server:

1. Check if there is an easy-to-use web console or utility to simplify configuration and management.

2. Protect your networks in a connected world. Make sure the serial device server you choose has sufficient security functions to keep your data protected. Using strong login passwords or creating an IP whitelist easy ways to limit access to your serial device servers to authorised users.

3. For IIoT projects that connects many field devices and transmits critical field data,  Choose an industrial grade serial device server. It should endure harsh environments, such as extreme temperatures or high electromagnetic interference. This will minimises chances of data loss arising from a serial device server shutdown.

Moxa's Nport 6000 and CN2500 terminal servers provide enhanced security features. Dual LAN and dual power. Security features are designed based on IEC 62443 standards. Cybersecurity features range from encrypted serial to ethernet data transmission, customised user group privileges, secure remote access via https and SSH, and more.

Yes. Moxa Nport device servers feature a COM Grouping function. You can keep existing settings and flexibly add backup devices to an existing network.
Yes. Use the Maximum Connection function on supported Moxa Nport device servers to automatically send serial data to up to 8 host computers. You can designate which computer is the primary host. Each host receives the same data at the same time (i.e., automatic back up).
Yes. Moxa Nport supports multiple primary hosts in the same network. Use the Command by Command mode on supported serial device servers. With this function, there is no need to synchronize all the host computers together.
Moxa’s NPort Windows driver manager can support up to 1,024 COM ports at once. You only need one host computer to monitor and control all your field devices at the same time.
Yes, this is possible. Download the basic (free) version tacacs.net to install TACACS server on your PC. Follow instructions provided by TACACS installation wizard. Afterwhich you will be able to configure user authentication on web console of Moxa Nport 6000 series.
COM ports added using the NPort Administration Suite are not visible in the Windows Device Manager. If you need to check these COM ports, you can view the COM ports in the NPort Administrator. To see the COM ports in Windows Device Manager, use the NPort Windows Driver Manager to map the COM ports.
Yes. Moxa Nport 6000 serial to ethernet terminal servers were designed with the latest IPv6 specifications in mind and are certified by the IPv6 Ready Logo Program.
Yes. Nport features Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) that IT administrators can setup to receive real-time status reports for remote administration. IT administrators can receive automatic real-time warnings through SNMP trap and e-mail notifications on events such as (1) system restart (2) unauthorised user login (3) changes to network settings.
Moxa Secure Terminal Servers (Nport 6000 series) offers an innovative Reverse Real COM mode. In this mode, Moxa NPort device server will actively initiate a connection to the remote host/server that is listed in the destination IP field after boot up.
Moxa Secure Terminal Servers (Nport 6000 series) offers an innovative Reverse Real COM mode. In this mode, Moxa NPort device server will actively initiate a connection to the remote host/server that is listed in the destination IP field after boot up.
Moxa Nport has an Advanced Data Packing function to ensure proper framing of messages and eliminates incomplete messages.
Moxa NPort device servers provide continuous support for new and legacy operating systems, even if the operating system is no longer supported by its vendor.
Moxa Wireless NPort devices record the events on the serial ports in log files that are stored in the system RAM. Total storage size is 64KB. You can download these log files (.txt format) for details on serial port events.
If network connection (Ethernet or WLAN) goes down, raw data from NPort’s serial ports is stored in the devices. Total storage size is 20MB. After network connection recovers, Moxa wireless NPort devices send the data sequentially to the destination. With serial port buffer feature, users don’t have to worry about data loss when network connection drops.
When using a Windows-based host, TNS recommends Moxa NPort Administrator Suite. It is a graphical user interface that simplifies the installation process and keeps existing host IP settings. Nport Administrator allows deployment of up to 1024 devices at the same time and to map virtual serial ports. Run the software and click the search button to locate all Nport serial device servers on the network. Configuration of serial/ethernet/com-port parameters can be done quickly. Free downloads are available at Moxa's website.
All of Moxa NPort series device servers and serial terminal servers come with multiple serial-to-Ethernet operation modes that preserve the original serial communication settings for a wide array of applications.
If an Ethernet connection is detected in Moxa NPort, the WLAN interface will not be enabled by default. If you want to enable the WLAN interface, you must configure the wireless related parameters, restart the NPort, and then pull out the Ethernet cable.
